New College Lecture Series 2010: Music Modernity and God.

Guest Lecturer and Performer: Prof. Jeremy Begbie.

The John Niland Scientia Building, UNSW. Admission free - bookings essential. (02) 9381 1999.
newcollege@unsw.edu.au.

In this series of lectures it includes a performance and recordings...

Jeremy Begbie will explore how music can enable us to ‘read’ our culture with the eyes of Christian faith and respond in fresh ways to some of the deepest dilemmas of our time.

Lecture 1 - Tuesday 14 September Creativity–Can we be creative in a world made by God?

Human creativity is often seen as merely a matter of bringing order to the physical world. Creativity and discovery are assumed to work against each other. The roots of this assumption will be explored before examining some of the music of J.S. Bach in order to open up a fuller, trinitarian vision in which discovery is integral to all human making.

6.15pm The John Niland Scientia Building, UNSW Drinks & canapés. Lecture commences at 7.15pm.

Lecture 2 - Wednesday 15 September Freedom – Can we be free with God in our space?

It has been said that the quest for freedom defines the modern age. And it is often assumed that the more God is involved in our lives, the less freedom we have. In this lecture, Jeremy Begbie will show that ‘musical space’ can help us develop a far more biblical account of human freedom and discover that God is not freedom’s enemy.
7.30pm The John Niland Scientia Building, UNSW

Lecture 3 - Thursday 16 September Language – Can we speak about God without words?

While language is powerful, many point to its severe limits. This lecture explores the ways music has been caught up in the debate about the power and limits of language. Many say music can ‘transcend’ words. What place is there for music in a faith that depends on God using human words to make himself known?

One Heart 4 Our Nation is a ground breaking conference where Christian networks representing different cultures will come together to find common ground on which to go forward to pray for and serve our nation.

Speakers will represent the passion that comes from a faith refined in the fires of persecution. They will bring the fervency of prayer that changed the course of history of a nation.

They will bring inspiring stories of the grace and love of God as He has responded to His peoples cries for mercy, and spiritual renewal. It is hoped these stories ignite a new spirit of united prayer and intercession for Australia, not within ethnic communities, but across ethnic cultural boundaries.

This Conference is for those who have a heart for Australia, whether born here or brought to this land, not to escape their past, but to give them a glorious future.

In view of the wide range of cultures we expect to attend the Conference, speakers have agreed it should be in the language of our nation:  English.

This will allow all cultures to join together in one heart, to speak with one voice and to hear the Holy Spirit speak to His people. This is a Conference not to be missed by anyone who calls Australia their home and who desires our nation to arise to its God given destiny as part of the Great Southlands of the Holy Spirit.

Be led in prayer by Pastors and leaders of Churches from many of the different cultural communities represented in the Body of Christ across Sydney. The Word of God declares; "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people" (Matthew 4:23 NKJV).

"Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them" (Matthew 4:24 NKJV).

Every last Sunday of the month, Light of the World Ministries Church holds its monthly miracle service. Over the years, countless people have been healed of all manner of sicknesses and diseases. From terminal cancer to barreness, deafness to quadreplegia, depression to blood disease, mental illness to blindness, demon-possession to heart problems.

The Lord in His word tells us: "For I am the Lord who heals you" (Exodus 15:26 NKJV). And "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8 NKJV). Jesus Christ is the same and has not changed! He healed all who came to Him in faith two thousand years ago and is still healing all who come to Him in faith today.

Jesus Christ is alive and moving at Toongabbie! Come and see!

Did you know:
* Many coffee farmers around the world are under-paid for their product and live in extreme poverty;
* Over 200,000;
* Many of these children use dangerous tools (e.g. children are used in production of cocoa in West African farms, 10,000 of whom are as slaves; machetes) and pesticides.

For this reason, I will be walking over 115km over 5 days in Central NSW with limited supplies to raise money to help provide these workers with basic needs. But there is a way we can reject these products. If you walked into your local cafe, chances are that your coffee or chocolate you purchase has been involved in production by people in poverty and, even worse, enslaved. We want these people to be treated with respect and to have the basic needs in life. Make sure your coffee or chocolate when you purchase it is Fairtrade certified or Rainforest Alliance Certified. Both of these certifications protect the right for the producers to be treated with respect and to have life’s most basic needs.

Please contact me for more information on the issue, by calling 02 9899 8351 or emailing me at thefairtradeissue@danielkal.com.

You can help me raise money for this issue buy filling the sheet out attached (cheque or cash) and sending it to us. We will email you a conformation response. Please view next sheet for payment details. Our aim is to purchase as many water tanks and food (for families) in poverty as possible, through Compassion Australia. Please sponsor me by calling the number above or support me along the way.

HSC Lockdown is a non residential HSC study camp run by Scripture Union NSW. It is designed to give Year 12 students a daily solid block of study time in the lead up to the HSC, and provide a distraction free environment for students who might struggle to find it at home.

You get the benefits of a regular study camp, but you get the added benefit of sleeping in your own bed. Scripture Union has been running study camps in various forms for decades, and believe that this model gives students a great balance of focussed study, quality tuition, new friendships, fun (not too much of course), and an opportunity to consider the role of Jesus in their life.

HSC Lockdown is an affordable, effective, maybe even life changing five days of HSC prep.

Registrations now open, places are limited. For more information, and to register online go to: www.hsclockdown.com.

A heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, LETTERS TO GOD is the story of what happens when one boy’s walk of faith crosses paths with one man’s search for meaning — the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them.

Tyler Doherty is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy. Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace.

To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher and the ultimate pen pal — Tyler’s prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis. The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels, a beleaguered postman standing at a crossroads in his life.

At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. Overtime he begins to form a friendship with the Doherty family – getting to know not just Tyler but his tough, tender yet overwhelmed mum, stalwart grandmother and teen brother Ben. Moved by Tyler’s courage, Brady realizes what he must do with the letters, a surprise decision that will transform his heart and uplift his newfound friends and community – in an exhilarating act of testament to the contagious effect of one boy’s unwavering faith against the odds.

Inspired by a true story, LETTERS TO GOD, directed by David Nixon (Fireproof, Facing the Giants), is an intimate, moving and often funny story about the galvanizing effect one child’s belief can have on his family, friends and community. LETTERS TO GOD is a well written, entertaining, heart-rending, and inspiring! LETTERS TO GOD is an impressive movie. It is extremely well written.

The dialogue is edgy and drives the story forward. The production quality is first rate. There is even great attention to the music, which is usually forgotten in low-budget productions.

"LETTERS TO GOD is the type of movie you want everyone to see, one of the most encouraging and inspiring movies in a long time." - Ted Baehr, Movieguide(R).

With, one-in-four pregnancies ending in miscarriage and one-in-six couples experience some degree of infertility, there are many people in our communities and churches who are forced to deal with these emotional challenges.

This website (www.miscarriageinfertility.org) will allow people who are experiencing miscarriage, infertility, or both, the opportunity to see the experience of other people without the emotional difficulty of a face-to-face meeting.

The plan is to post testimonies on the website from people who have experienced miscarriage or infertility.

These testimonies would be posted in a .pdf format, which could then be read, downloaded or printed. The aim is to let people know that others have survived miscarriage or infertility and that they do not have to cope with these emotionally devastating events alone.
