Why can't I hear Hope 103.2 streaming or any other streams?

1. Check that your computer's speaker is not muted and that the volume setting is not too low. To do this,
double-click on the speaker icon at the bottom of your computer screen and change the setting as required.

2. Check that you have Media Player 9 or higher installed on your computer.
Read more about installing Media Player.

3. If you are at work, your company may have a 'firewall' enabled to securely protect its
internal data. Sometimes your company's 'proxy' settings may be set in such a way that they
prevent external streaming sources from occurring. If this is the case, please contact the IT
    department of your company.

4. If you are using a Mozilla-based browser, check you have the plug-in installed to the correct
    place.

Could you help me with Windows Media Player?

• I cannot see the top selection menu—File, View, Play, Tools, Help:
Click the button on the top left corner of the Media Player  window and the menu should be restored.

• I cannot find the version of the Media Player:
In the top selection menu, click on ‘Help’ and then click on ‘About Windows Media Player’. A pop-up
  window displays the version number.

• I can only see a small window of the Media Player:
The player may be in its compacted ‘skin’ mode. See below if you want to exit this mode.

• I cannot exit the skin mode:
Click the button on the bottom right corner and the ‘full mode’ is restored.

Why does the audio stream sometimes stop for a while or stutter?

Audio technology on the internet is still relatively new. The amount of information that can travel along the average telephone line is limited. This can cause a queue in the audio signal. Current streaming technology makes best efforts not to lose this information and holds or 'buffers' it until the line is clear to receive further information. This is why there is sometimes a stuttering or delaying effect when receiving a stream.

Can I listen to Hope 103.2 on the Internet?

Yes! You can listen to the programs live or past programs and segments via ‘downloads’.

What do I need to listen to Internet radio?

You first need to have ‘audio playing’ software installed in your computer. There are many audio players like Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, Quicktime and others that work on Windows PCs and/or Apple Macs. Many computers would have already an audio player pre-installed. Otherwise you can download any of these programs, mostly free, from the Internet.

Secondly, you need to have a reasonably fast—a ‘broadband’ type—connection to the Internet. Although a ‘dial-up’ connection can work, it would normally deliver a less-than-optimal listening experience.

Finally you need a set of speakers or headphones connected to your computer. Most computers come provided with an internal speaker.

How can I listen to Hope 103.2 on the Internet?

It’s easy! Just click on LISTEN LIVE! in the ‘Audio Lounge’ (just below our logo) section of the Home page and then choose one of the channels (Hope 103.2, FRESH or Inspire) by clicking on Listen in Media Player. (If your computer is a Windows PC and it doesn't have Media Player  pre-installed, it can be downloaded from our website—just click on the Windows Media Player icon at the bottom of the LISTEN LIVE page.)

If you have an Apple Mac computer, we recommend you download the Flip4Mac utility from http://www.flip4mac.com/download.htm, which will allow you to listen to our programs on your QuickTime player. Hope 103.2 will soon also provide a streaming broadcast directly compatible with QuickTime.

What is internet radio?

In traditional radio audio content (words, music), either live or pre-recorded, is transmitted over the ‘air waves’. Internet radio uses new technologies to broadcast the same content over the Web. Your computer ‘tunes’ to the Internet site of the station, receives the digitised audio content and translates it back to normal sound.

See also streaming and downloads. You can now listen to Hope 103.2 on the Internet.

What is ‘streaming’ radio?

This is the closest experience to listening to a normal radio broadcast. Streaming is a technology that allows you to listen to an Internet radio broadcast virtually at the same tame it is being transmitted and received by you computer. The computer does not have to wait until an audio ‘file’ is ‘downloaded’ to start playing it. The disadvantage is that the program does not get stored on your computer so it cannot be played again. See downloads and podcasting.

What type of music does Hope 103.2 broadcast?

Hope 103.2 broadcasts modern music from a mix of Christian and secular artists and bands. Perhaps the only condition is that the lyrics do not contradict the values upheld by the radio.

Can I listen to Hope 103.2 as a normal radio?

Yes! Just tune to the FM band on 103.2 MHz.

What frequency does Hope 103.2 broadcast on?

Do I need an iPod player to podcast?

No you don't! You don't need an iPod or similar device to download or listen to podcasts. The files you are downloading are MP3 files and can be stored and listened to on your own computer. Podcasting makes the process of acquiring them easier.

What do I need to podcast?

How do I download one of Hope 103.2 programs?

First of all, before you start downloading programs, you may find useful defining a place in your computer where you will store them. In this way you will find them quickly and easily afterwards for replay. For example, you may want to create one or more ‘folders’ under My Documents with the name(s) of the program(s) you plan to download.

Once you have this bit organised, go to the 'LISTEN AGAIN' section in the 'Audio Lounge' area of the website and select the program you are interested in (e.g. Classic Reflections). Then click on the title or on the GO GET IT button. This will take you to the download page where you can choose from the available issues.

The programs can be downloaded in two formats (see mp3) but the process is essentially the same. Click on Play Now or Download MP3 and a ‘File Download’ pop-up dialog box will appear on your screen. Click on the ‘Save’ button and a new ‘Save As’ pop-up window will appear.

Select the folder you created before by clicking on the arrow on the right of the small ‘Save in:’ window. Go through the drop-down list of storage areas until you find the folder and click on it. The name of the folder should appear now in the ‘Save in:’ window.

The next step is to name the file you are about to download. Look in the ‘File name:’ small window at the bottom; a name similar to ‘xxx_2007-07-19’ should be there. This is the name Hope 103.2 assigned to this particular download file. You may choose to keep it or give it a name more meaningful to you by writing the new name over.

Now you’re ready! Just click on the ‘Save’ button down on the right of the window and the download operation will start. A new window opens reporting the progress of the download. Depending on the size of the file and the speed of your connection to the Internet, the download may take from a few seconds to some minutes.

Once this window displays ‘Download complete’, you can close it by clicking on the ‘Close’ button. The program is now stored in the folder.

How do I listen to a download (a downloaded Hope 103.2 program)?

Open the folder that contains the particular download; you can do this for example by going through the list of folders in Windows Explorer and double-clicking on the folder once you found it. Then choose the program you want to listen to and double-click on the file icon. The default media player in your computer (see ‘What do I need to listen to Internet radio?’) will start playing back the program for you.

Alternatively you can start the media player of your choice (e.g. Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc—as long as it is installed in your computer!) and then open the program you want to listen to.

In Windows Media Player, click on ‘File’ (on the left of the top menu) and a drop-down list appears. Click on ‘Open’ from this list and a new window pops up with a list of folders. Once you find the folder and the program in it, double-click on the file icon. (If you cannot find the top menu, please go to 'Could you help me with Windows Media Player?').

If the player is in its ‘skin’ mode, click on the top left button—an  ‘Open File’ label should appear when the cursor ‘hovers’ over it—and the usual folder selection window pops up.

What do I need to subscribe and listen to podcasts?

A free software program called a ‘podcatcher’ or ‘aggregator’ provides all the functions you need to subscribe, record and play back the podcasts—you can even download the podcasts to your portable audio digital player. The beauty of this software is that it runs in the background of your computer checking for and downloading updated podcasts. Two commonly used software programs include Juice and iTunes.

What is a 'podcast' and 'podcasting'?

The new words ‘podcast’ and ‘podcasting’ are a blend of the terms ‘iPod’—Apple’s portable music player—and ‘broadcasting’. A podcast is basically a recorded radio program—normally with voice and music audio content—that is sent automatically over the Internet to your computer after you subscribe to it. (A ‘vodcast’ contains video as well.) In this context, subscribe means just requesting the program since many podcasts are free.

Podcasting is the process of preparing (recording and editing) the podcasts and distributing them to the computers of subscribed users.

Unlike streaming radio, podcasting allows you to select the programs you want to listen to and a convenient time for you to do it—you won’t miss your favourite program! You can also replay the program as it is stored on your computer or portable audio player.

What do ‘downloading’ and ‘downloads’ mean?

In the context of the Internet, the term ‘download’ or ‘downloading’ refers to the transfer of ‘electronic data’ from a remote central system (e.g. a website) to your computer. Electronic data includes any kind of media information (text, audio, images, video) that can be stored in digital form as a ‘file’. The data received from the remote system is stored as a file in your computer.

Files that are offered for downloading or that have been downloaded are normally called ‘downloads’.

Some websites provide information in streaming mode but do not allow downloading (i.e. storing in your computer for later replay) for copyright or other reasons.

What is MP3?

MP3 is a method of storing audio information in digital form. It can be compared with the way that music and speech are recorded in a digital compact disc (CD).

The advantage over the method used for CDs is the size of the recording. While on a normal music CD a single track (song) can take around 35 megabytes (Mb), the same recording in MP3 format takes about one tenth of that, 3.5 Mb.

This is achieved by ‘compressing’ the original sound, i.e. suppressing certain sounds that the human ear cannot hear and using other complex techniques. When an MP3 recording is played back, the resulting sound is of slightly lesser quality than the original sound.

The smaller size makes them suitable for storing audio files in computers and downloading them over the Internet.

Some new formats have been developed recently that provide a better quality of sound and even smaller file sizes.

Is it safe to make a donation online?

Yes it is. Hope 103.2 uses SecurePay's Internet Payment Gateway to provide a secure environment for the authorisation of credit card transactions over the Internet. Confidential information including client credit card details are encrypted the moment they are transmitted from the client's browser to the banking network using industry standard SSL 128-bit RC4 encryption technology.

A client's credit card details are not stored anywhere on the Internet, and the only company who has access to this data is the merchant's bank. The bank also sends confirmation information via the same encryption technology back to the client's browser. These secure processes provide clients with peace of mind when purchasing online.
